Custom MLP: Bait Prep Tutorial by The-Lancastrian Custom MLP: Bait Prep Tutorial by The-Lancastrian
Note: this is a HUGE picture. Download to see it full size.

The first of my promised tutorials: preparing the bait. This is how I take a store bought pony and turn it into a blank canvas, ready for sculpting, painting, or whatever else I plan to do with it. Other tutorials will be posted when I have time, but finishing ponies for the show takes precedent. If you want a tutorial on a specific aspect of customizing, please ask! I'll be hitting the major points (Bait prep, full body repaint, symbol painting, eye painting, rehairing), but anything else will only be posted if requested. Enjoy!

What about ponies that don't have a neck ring, and their heads are just completely attached?
Should I just cut it off and glue it back on?

Can I use nailpolish remover for the eye and symbol?

Yep and myself i think it's better since it has to risk of doing the pony any harm just takes longer to do but i use nailpolish remover it works.

Do you know how to remove the cutie mark on ponies with the raised cutie mark?

you could try a smooth sandpaper after washing the paint stuff off.

Tried that, didn't work. It's a piece of plastc held onto the pony with glue and a knob on the inside. Any way to melt the glue, maybe?

Maybe. Or you could pop the cutie mark off and maybe put some air dry clay or something over it? model magic might work or maybe a plastic based clay.

Is the head-cutting any different for G4s? I have a G4 Applejack $8(NZ$) pony and I'm going to make it into a Slendermane, is it any different?

"Mostly. G4's heads are attached slightly differently. Just pull off the head and then use an exacto knife to carefully cut around the hard plastic insert in the neck. Use plyers to pull it out and set it aside for reassembly. This way you can get at the tail. Everything else is the same.

You can, but it smears the paint in my experience. Pure acetone is cheap and easy to get - go to any local drug store."

she had answered it down below in a lower comment lol.

I was wondering: Do the ponies have to be re-haired to change their mane color? Would dying their mane work too?

You generally can't dye synthetic fibers without making them rough and crinkly, if you can get the dye to stick at all, especially long ones.

So glad I found this! Found an image of a pony turned into one of my favorite video game characters but it was a drawing and not an actual physical toy. My concern was figuring out how to do the hair, but I found the hair one too and will head to the thrift store and pick up some ponies!

...Or instead of doing the complicated thing with the symbol, you could paint over it.

It's not that complicated - takes about three seconds. If I'm not going to repaint the whole pony it makes more sense for me to do it this way.

Can I wipe the eye paint with that acetone too?
Reply
:iconthe-lancastrian:

Yep. I find the eyes smear more on me so I usually just use an acetone soaked q-tip to take off the eyelashes and then paint over the eye with white to get a blank slate. You can take all the eye paint off if that works better for you.

This is very comprehensive. I have one slight problem: finding 100% acetone products in the UK. Only products I can get are pure acetone nail products.

Acetone is a nail polish remover and paint stripper, and pure acetone is the nail polish remover used in nail salons. My pure acetone is intended as nail polish remover and labeled as such, but as long as it's pure it doesn't matter what it's labeled for.

What do you mean with symbols? is that the thing that they have on their flanks?
and is there a different way of removing those? because i am a rather young pony remodler, and i am not sure how safe my mum wil concider acetone.

Yes, the symbols are on their flanks and the cutie mark is on the hoof. Acetone is the only way I know how to remove the mark cleanly. Talk to your mom about it, and do some research if you or she are concerned. There is a chance that it could take the color or varnish off of fabric or a wood table, so those surfaces need to be protected, but it does the same things to skin that the rubbing alcohol you use to disinfect cuts does. If your mom says no you could try regular nail polish remover which is diluted acetone, but it will take longer and may smear the mark paint into the plastic of the pony. You can leave marks on and paint over them if you repaint the whole pony, and can always sculpt over them as well if you want to that.

Thanks, I will talk to her :) Acetone also proved a very neat question (what is it) in our class quiz on everything XD (our maths teacher didnt want to do anything with us, so she set us up a one group asks the otehr trivia)

Ah, another project to try this summer along with cooking and sculpting!

I do have one pony I wouldn't care customizing~ And she's white, perfect for painting! I'll use your tutorials, they are very well explained.

Yup! I've actually just started making a bait, removing the tail is easy, but the mane's really harder~ :XD:

And beginner's luck: I cut my finger trying to remove the head, I should be more careful! ^^' Mostly cuz I was holding the mane, I forgot to cut it off first.

are all the pony types made the same? i have the latest version (the ones with the adnormal large heads) and i was wondering if this tutorial will work for those too

If they're the G3s with the twisty heads then yes, just pull the head off without cutting the neck (as there's no glue) and then follow the rest of the steps to remove the mane. If they're the G4s I don't know as I haven't pulled one of those apart yet. They should have pretty similar construction though.

i think they are the new G4s... the bigger version of the ponyvillies. my biggest concern is the share of the heads... oh well i'll just sit back and wait for somebody to do one xDDD

they're still pretty new so its hard to find customs of them
